Description

This one-day event will explore the richness of Old Norse literature with the expert guidance of Prof. Sif Rikhardsdottir (University of Iceland). Prof. Rikhardsdottir has published widely on Old Norse engagements with Arthurian literature, and this expertise will form the basis for an interactive workshop, 2 hours plus question time, entitled «Old Norse Romance in Context: Gender, Genre and Revisionist Literary Histories». This workshop will principally explore the transmission and development of romance as a genre in the North. This workshop will follow from a lecture, one hour plus question time, in Prof. Rikhardsdottir's other pole of expertise, emotion, on which she has recently published the monograph, Emotion in Old Norse Literature: Translations, Voices, Contexts (D. S. Brewer, 2017). This work explores emotion as both a literary motif and a social phenomenon, and will form the basis for the lecture.
