Description

Postfeminism has become a buzzword. While within academia it is contested, in the media it is used disparagingly to talk about contradictory issues that relate to “contemporary women.” The idea of organizing a workshop around “postfeminism” aims at shedding light on this conundrum. As a term that relates to notions of femininity within neoliberalism, postfeminism is a useful umbrella term that allows for exploring gender configurations in the contemporary global world. Postfeminism brings gender, cultural, and literary studies together with social and political sciences, making it an ideal topic to be investigated across disciplines. As most of the activities organized on gender studies in Swiss Universities are thought from and targeted to the social sciences, this workshop will provide an opportunity of presenting gender studies and feminism from the highly heterogeneous field of cultural studies.
One of the guest speakers will be presenting original research on the topic of postfeminism, while the other will be talking about feminist affect, but doctoral students are welcome to propose research on any aspect of feminism or gender studies, broadly understood.

We invite PhD students of all domains to present their work in the framework of this workshop. This is a unique occasion for PhD students to be able to discuss their doctoral research in front of world-renowned academics. We invite students to present their work in 15-20 minutes, followed by 15-20 minutes of questions, comments, feedback and suggestions by Angela McRobbie and/or Rosalind Gill and other workshop participants. Any of the following research topics are very welcome:

  • Feminism

  • Postfeminism

  • Feminist theory

  • Gender studies

  • Sexuality

  • Media studies

  • Cultural studies

  • Popular culture
