Description

This workshop will focus on the topic of 'Accents on the Shakespearean Stage'. The invited guest, Prof. Sonia Massai (King's College London), is an expert on this topic, with a monograph of hers being scheduled to appear with Cambridge UP in early 2020. The event will consist of a one-hour lecture by Prof. Massai, followed by a lengthy question time, in the course of which the PhD students will be asked to engage with issues addressed during the lecture (2 hours); and an interactive workshop, led by Prof. Massai. The lecture will consider what is a stake in the use of normative and non-normative accents on the Shakespearean stage from a historical perspective, from the early modern period to date, while the workshop will explore a variety of considerations relating to accents in contemporary performances of Shakespeare.
