The purpose of this PHD day is to address two important issues in the life of a doctoral student: writing and presenting themselves professionally. The two issues are different and meant to bring together students at different stages of their doctoral studies, though arguably every student is concerned by questions of writing and academic job interviews. First, in the morning, Will Kaufman (U of C. Lancashire), Anita Auer (UNIL-Linguistics) and Agnieszka Soltysik (UNIL-literature) will discuss the job interview as a genre and rhetorical situation, offering advice on what students can expect to be asked and how they should answer. This session will include more general advice about how to create a professional impression as well as practical advice on navigating the kinds of questions they are likely to be asked by potential employers. Then, in the afternoon, Joanne Chassot (UNIL) will run a workshop on writing the thesis, focusing on practical strategies for improving concentration and efficiency as a writer.
