Description |
This is the first of three one-day workshops organised respectively at the Universities of Neuchâtel, Geneva and Fribourg for an Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Literature Travelling Seminar. Taking our cue from Switzerland's position as an Enlightenment hub, this session will explore the complex ties, connections, and tensions between England and Europe in the long Romantic period, in particular the relations between literature, philosophy, and political theory. The event will consist of two lectures delivered respectively by Allen Reddick and Paul Hamilton, followed by a doctoral workshop and student presentations of work-in-progress, with feedback from the two invited speakers. The event will most likely be held at the Pontet in Colombier, home of two important cosmopolitan writers with ties to Britain, Béat de Muralt and Isabelle de Charrière. |
