Description

This one-day workshop will feature two keynote lectures by established scholars in the field of motherhood studies, three presentations by doctoral students currently completing their dissertations in the field of motherhood studies, and a roundtable on contemporary parenting in academia. Participants will include practitioners in the field of childcare along with academic parents. This workshop seeks to bring the lived reality of parenting into conversation with literary discourse. Motherhood figures in medieval and early modern texts and is a central concern in feminist and other critical approaches to these older periods as well as to modern and contemporary literature. The portrayal of motherhood on social media these days offers itself to a discussion in terms of discourse analysis or multimodality. This workshop thus invites PhD candidates from literary and cultural studies, but also linguistics, with a direct interest in motherhood or a more general affinity for gender-related discussions. We hope to examine motherhood critically across literary genres, periods, and cultural contexts, considering more classical theoretical approaches along with evolving theories.
