Description | This CUSO workshop consists of two seminars and two lectures by our invited speakers, Dr. Ben Parsons of the University of Leicester and Dr. Rachel Willie of Liverpool John Moores University. The workshop will explore the genre of utopian and dystopian writing. Students will be invited to consider literary utopia / dystopia, its origins, rhetoric, and central themes in order to reflect on our own conceptions of utopia / dystopia and its place in literary studies. Utopian /dystopian texts and concepts will be placed in dialogue with one another to enable us to open up the discussions surrounding this notoriously slippery and indefinable genre. Throughout the day we will be engaging with broader fields such as travel writing, gender, representations of the body, political rhetoric and more – and the applications will move far beyond the early modern period. |
